| | I just had my first capoeira class last night, and it was fun, granted, but OH MY GOD, it hurts. There is no part of my body which is not screaming in agony. I mean, I usually operate under the assumption that I'm a sedentary lump, but OW THE BURNING. I can't even SIT DOWN without my ass begging for mercy. My abs are killing me. One particularly punishing move involved getting into a pushup position and then inching in that position from one end of the room to the other (about 50 feet). AAAAAAAGH. | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |
| | How awesome is it that Gaeta from Battlestar Galactica will be voicing L in the Death Note dub? Indescribably awesome, I believe. If he's half as good as Yamaguchi Kappei was in the original, I'll be satisfied. | comments: Leave a comment |

AHAHAHA. I would PAY to see this. Hee.
1. Why isn't everyone reading Fullmetal Alchemist? This series only gets better, and as of the most recent chapter, everything seems to be coming to a head plotwise. If this keeps up, FMA may edge out Monster as my favourite manga ever. 2. I've read enough shoujo manga that they all tend to blend together after a while, but I wonder if there's a short answer to the question "Why is it that the vast majority of the main guy love interests in shoujo manga are assholes?" This wasn't a revelation or anything to me, but SERIOUSLY, people, it's RIDICULOUS. I needn't point out the worst examples, as I'm sure they're familiar to anyone with a passing familiarity with the genre, but said assholish tendencies seems to be a lot more prevalent than I had previously thought, and the counterexamples tend to be few and far between. 3. They can't seriously be thinking of making Monster into a live-action movie. One reviewer said of Monster that it's about one-third longer than it needs to be; even assuming that's true, and taking that into account, there's no way that could be squeezed into a three-hour film. On a similar note... 4. Whose bright idea was it to attempt to make a feature film adaptation of The Watchmen? I couldn't imagine it in any other format, and I don't think the result of all the cuts necessary to cram it into that timeframe would be worth the effort. 5. I'm going to see the Transformers movie, bad reviews be damned. One of my earliest memories is being traumatized by the Head of Unicron when I went with my family to watch the animated movie back in 1986. Once again, my sentimental attachments have prevailed over my need for quality entertainment. Huzzah! | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |
| I don't know what's sadder: that I was watching a bad Brit horror movie at two in the morning, or that I almost immediately recognized the lead as Paul from the Dune miniseries.
On a lighter note, on a recent plane ride, I came up with an impromptu list of the Worst Movies Possible to show on a plane:
1. Flight 93 2. Executive Decision 3. Passenger 57 4. Air Force One 5. Red-Eye/Flightplan 6. World Trade Center 7. Fearless 8. Die Hard 2 9. Donnie Darko 10. Snakes on a Plane
These are all pretty recent, and the airplane disaster flick apparently has a long and storied history you can read about here:

| Now that I'm rewatching the last episode of the anime (with the Vash/Knives gunfight), all I can think of is that quote from one of the last Futurama episodes: "Now, now, now, perfectly symmetrical violence never solved anything." Hee!
I'll enjoy the anime while I can, as my recent Trigun manga reading has left me 99.9% sure that Vash isn't going to survive. In fact, I can't see any logical way for him to live, given the way Nightow's written it. Ah, well; what are shorter anime versions of long-running manga for, if not to reassure us that at least in some universe, things turn out the way we like?
Speaking of anime adaptations, the new Nodame Cantabile series looks fantastic. Given the quality of the source material, and the fact that they somehow managed to wrangle H&C's director to work on the project, how could it be anything less than awesome? I particularly look forward to the Rach. | comments: Leave a comment |

Melanierain: 1.

| Seen this afternoon in the quad of my former college, a girl wearing the following ensemble:
1. Canary yellow top. 2. White fur cropped jacket. 3. Pleated white miniskirt. 4. Knee-high white boots with spiked heels.
More disturbing was the idea that she appeared to be playing a position in the impromptu baseball game taking place. | comments: Leave a comment |
| Sitting on top of the entrance to one of the many libraries on campus is...a pumpkin: a pumpkin with a large pi symbol carved into it.
I have no idea how it got there, and I have no idea how long it's been there. The pumpkin is in remarkably good condition considering Hallowe'en was more than two weeks ago.
Awesome.
Also, I may or may not go to see the new Harry Potter film tomorrow night wearing the formal black gown of my college. It is supposed to be a group effort, but that doesn't really tone down the dorkiness; if anything, it would have the opposite effect. I'm looking forward to the film, at any rate, if this outing materializes. | comments: Leave a comment |

| If I were asked to write a list of study tips, I think I could just as easily outline my own study habits and say, "Do the opposite." To wit:
My most recent recent feat was writing this morning's exam in spite of waking up about fifteen minutes before it was scheduled to begin. After studying until two in the morning, I set my alarm for 6:15 (bad, bad idea) and dozed off. I awoke at 8:45 a.m. and had a brilliant "I'm fucked" moment of realization. I /just/ had enough time to roll out of bed (I slept in my clothes, thank God), grab my books (it was an open-book test, and I brought three large texts with me) and notes, and make a run for it. Fortunately, I live about a ten-minute walk from the examination site, or, as it turns out, about a five-minute dash, and the exam started fifteen minutes late (at 9:15), so all's well that ends well, I suppose.
This is the first exam in a while that I've written without some form of caffeine in my system, so I wonder if that will be reflected in the final grade. For the record, the exam itself was pretty reasonable, and it /was/ open-book.
The interesting result of all this is that my great accomplishment has very little to do with the substance of the exam. Fuck, I made it on time! I rock! | comments: Leave a comment |
| 1. Sign for what looks like acceptance package, squealing ever so slightly.
2. Attempt to tear open package several times, and finally succeed while hopping from foot to foot at the same time.
3. Grin like an idiot while waving the package around, looking for a potential gloatee.
So...yeah, not exactly a Kodak moment. On the other hand, yay! | comments: Leave a comment |
| In order to quantify exactly how unproductive my holidays were, I sat down and wrote a list of all the television shows and movies I watched during the break. It was disturbingly long. As for unadulterated binging, I think I hit my low point during the Chappelle's Show marathon on Comedy Central. That or Caddyshack.
On the bright side, I did manage to catch the Christmas special episodes of The Office. Yay! I was spoiled for the ending going in, of course, but my cold heart grew three sizes too big watching it.
I also got a chance to listen to the most addictive song I've ever heard: "Dragostea Din Tei" by O-Zone (Romanian, in case you were wondering). Google. Download. Succumb.
I'm also coming to terms with my addiction to NANA, a manga series by Yazawa Ai. I devour each new chapter like a junkie mainlining crack. I can't explain why it's so addictive, considering how depressing it is. Yazawa is the Joss Whedon of manga when it comes to a) confounding the audience's expectations and b) breaking the audience's hearts over and over and over. | comments: Leave a comment |
| Go see The Incredibles. Now.
I saw it last night, and it was, well, incredible. The animation was great, the character and background designs were imaginative, and the writing was uniformly excellent. There were sequences where I nearly choked because I was laughing so hard.
I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much if I hadn't been a big comic book fan. This movie is a love letter to comic book geeks thoroughly versed in the superhero genre and its conventions. There's plenty for the Bond movie fan to enjoy as well.
To sum up my reaction: OMG Wheeeee! | comments: Leave a comment |
| It's hard for me to call the U.S. election a "nailbiter" due to my own gloomy, oppressive certainty that Bush will win. Le sigh. At least Barack Obama won. That man is my hero. *heart*
My Economics prof asked the class today who we thought would win, and the majority agreed with me. He had the sense to avoid asking us which candidate we preferred, although that would have been a no-brainer. I don't claim to speak for the political climate at other Canadian campuses, but at my school (in the "artsy" circles at least) expressing support for the current U.S. Administration is on a moral par with admitting to torturing kittens. The Republican supporters on campus, I imagine, are mostly quiet. I believe that they do indeed exist, although sometimes it seems said existence can only be theoretically posited. | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |

| | This is the best song I've heard in a while. I had heard and read good things about Neko Case, but I was always turned off by the "country" connection. Big, big, /big/ mistake on my part. Not only is her voice gorgeous, but this one song, "Deep Red Bells," grabbed me by the throat with its intensity and disturbing imagery. It really is that good. | comments: Leave a comment |

| It's official. Bleach is the best series ever. Each time I think the story can't get any better, it does. All the characters kick ass. The storyline keeps getting more complicated (well, complicated for a shounen manga series, anyway, which is saying something), but everything fits together so well. Who cares if the story develops slowly? The pacing is just fine, given that there's so much to cover.
So, to conclude, Bleach 131 rocks the house, and I fucking love this series even more than I already did.
*small voice*Oh, and I'm done exams. Yay.*small voice* | comments: Leave a comment |
